I am helping backstage with costumes for a small community theatre production. The available scarves share the same depth but differ between rose and muted terracotta. Under the rehearsal lamps, the rust scarf gives the actor a healthy warmth. Daylight reverses the impression and throws a rusty glow onto the actor's skin. Rose loses energy on stage, although it looks composed beside the lobby windows. Both items must be returned unchanged, so permanent adjustments are impossible. Both scarves were photographed at equal distance with identical camera settings. The visual record is clear, but the proper reference light is still uncertain. I checked this personal color test page for a repeatable comparison method. That approach clarified the difference between value, undertone, and reflected color. I am leaning toward the cooler scarf with a modest change to stage lighting. That choice would avoid the orange cast during the lobby scene after intermission. Have costume makers faced a similar reversal between rehearsal lamps and daylight? I mainly need a repeatable production choice rather than an absolute color label.
